Today I sat in a meeting for an upcoming project that focuses on seniors and the media. As I sat there, I pondered a few questions.

  1. Why did we lack so much when it came to aging?
  2. How could we become better?
This is not an easy question to answer. After all, in people’s heads seniors are not customers, unlike millennials or centennials.
This is the furthest thing from the truth though because every generation spends and every human needs things. Yes, many (it seems less and less) seniors, once they reach retirement age, will live on some of pension (that’s fixed) or some kind of government assistance, but that doesn’t mean they still won’t spend and that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a large group of people who will have more money to spend. With this upcoming group of seniors anyways, upcoming senior generations might not be able to spend even a little money.
Seniors are viable customers, and we need to give them more. Not only give them more though but let them speak about what they actually want. So much of the things that come out for an aging population have very little thought put into it or feels like it was designed by a 20-year old male.
Thankfully people are taking note, and things are starting to change, but we need to keep pushing for both senior input and involvement. Asking what seniors want, taking note and then going back and a building is what we need to focus on as a senior planet.
What current companies are your favorite regarding catering to a senior population?
